How can I get a burn permit?

Use the link below to view a map and click on your location.  If “yes” appears in the “Burning Permits Issued” column on your county/township, you are authorized to burn today. This serves as your burn permit – you don’t need to print anything.

Am I required to file a Property Transfer Affidavit?

Yes. All property transfers of ownership occurring in the State of Michigan since 1994 must be reported on a Property Transfer Affidavit form to the local Assessing Office within 45 days of sale or transfer to avoid penalties

What is a Principal Residence?

If you own and occupy your residence, it is exempt from the 18 mill school operating tax. To claim an exemption, complete the Principal Residence Exemption form (PDF) and return it along with a copy of the front and back of your driver’s license for each person and 1 of the following documents to verify occupancy.

  1. A cancelled check listing the property address (please black out all other information except the property address and date);
  2. A statement such as medical, bank or charge account (only the portion showing your mailing address and date need to be submitted);
  3. Your income tax return showing the mailing address (please black out all other information except the mailing address and date);
  4. An insurance policy (only the portion showing your mailing address and date need be submitted).
I moved and no longer live at the home I claimed as my principal residence, what do I need to do?

You are required to file a Request to Rescind Principal Residence Exemption form (PDF) when you no longer own and occupy the property as your principal residence. The exemption will be removed December 31 of the year you rescind the exemption.

How can I purchase a burial plot?

How do I apply for a Land Use Permit?

You can obtain a permit online through Cloudpermit! With Cloudpermit, you can:

Apply for Land-Use permits at any time, from anywhere; Check status of permit (receive automatic email updates); Schedule or cancel inspections; Communicate with the Zoning Department with time-stamped messages; Request and submit changes to an existing permit.

Where do I pay my property taxes?

Taxes can be paid in person, by mail, or online. Be advised, paying with a debit or credit card incurs a 3% fee. E-checks incur a $3.00 fee.

How do I schedule a large item pickup?

Residents are allowed one large item per week. Please place your large item by the roadside for Monday pickup. If it cannot be collected on Monday, it will be scheduled for pickup within five business days.

What are the options for leaf disposal?

Markey Township does not have a compost facility for leaves; however, curbside leaf pickup is offered in the spring and fall.

For 2026, leaf pickup dates are May 2, May 16, May 30, October 10, October 24, and November 7.

Leaves must be placed in paper biodegradable bags weighing no more than 50 pounds each. Please fold the tops of the bags closed and place them at the roadside by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled pickup date.

Residents who prefer to dispose of leaves at a compost facility may use the Denton Township compost, which is available to non-residents for an annual $50 permit. Please contact Denton Township directly to obtain a permit.

Do I need a permit to have a garage sale?

Yes, you are required to get a permit for a garage sale per Markey Township Zoning Ordinance 60. Permits are $3.00. 

Garage sales, yard sales, shall be permitted on any one (1) piece of property only three (3) times during any one (1) year, and at no time shall such sale have a duration of more than three (3) days. A permit for such sale shall be obtained at the Markey Township Hall. Garage sale signs are regulated as “temporary signs” within Section 16.03.
